Redistricting

At the School Board meeting on December 13, 2012, the School Board approved Option 3 for the redistricting plan. Option 3 was developed at the School Board work session earlier in the day from the Option 1(Adjusted) and Option 2 plans. At the work session, staff were directed to develop the Option 3 map utilizing the northern portion of Option 2 and the southern portion of Option 1 (Adjusted) with Broad Street at the divider.  
 
Rising fourth and fifth grade students will be allowed to attend their current elementary school if parents provide transportation. More information will be sent to these families after winter break. Additionally, any middle school feeder pattern adjustments will not affect current middle school students. Middle school phasing will begin with rising sixth graders in 2014 (current fourth graders). Existing fifth graders will attend the currently assigned middle school in 2013. Transportation for middle school students will be provided by HCPS during the two phase-in years.

Feeder Pattern Adjustments

A new west area elementary school will open in Henrico County in the fall of 2013 at 5680 Pouncey Tract Road. From September – December 2012, a community-led redistricting process will be initiated to meet three planning goals:

1. Establish an attendance boundary for the new elementary school #9.

2. Provide membership relief for elementary schools in the area with forecasted membership at 100% of capacity or higher.

3. Pursue opportunities to provide relief for elementary schools in the area with forecasted membership at 95-99.9% of capacity.

Any change to school boundaries will take effect beginning in fall 2013.

To engage community members in the process, a community-based redistricting committee will be established with two volunteer representatives from each of the study schools. The committee and staff will work collaboratively to develop scenarios and proposals to be considered by the broader community and the School Board.

A public hearing will be scheduled prior to approval of the boundary changes. Throughout the process, information will be provided through School Messenger, mailings/backpack fliers, HCPS-TV, and the HCPS website. Community members will also be invited to observe the redistricting committee work sessions.
