Jamestown Comes to Glen Allen Elementary School

We will continue our partnership with the Virginia Museums of Fine Arts by displaying educational exhibits in the halls of the school. The first SOL-related exhibition "Jamestown and Beyond: The World of 1607" reveals how the legacy of Jamestown has continued to affect art and culture in the last four hundred years.

Jamestown and Beyond: The World of 1607

Jamestown and Beyond: The World of 1607 examines how the new colony fit into the cultural, historical, and geographical context of the day - and how the story of Jamestown has continued to inspire American artists. Twelve framed reproductions of images from the VMFA collection combine with explanatory text and an introductory panel to illustrate the connections between the struggling colony and the world of 1607.

The Artful Cat

The remarkable cat! What other creature has made such a continuous, yet ever-changing appearance in the visual history of mankind? From the time of the ancient Egyptians, when they were worshipped as gods, cats in all sizes, shapes, and colors have been represented. Renaissance painters often included cats in their depictions of the Holy Family. Cats appear in many cautionary tales and didactic manuscripts of the 18th and 19th centuries, and they appear in abundance in 17th-century Dutch interiors, American primitive portraits, and even in the graphic works of renowned 20th-century artists such as Alexander Calder and Pablo Picasso. Although the mysterious and independent nature of the cat has remained constant through time, depictions of this creature are as varied and unique as the artists who have created them.

Glen Allen Elementary Has a New Mural!

Glen Allen New Mural

Earlier this year, faux finish artist Chris Lombard worked with 5th grade students in the art room. He showed them the faux finishes he has created in people's homes as a part of his business "Liquid Concepts". Then he demonstrated how to create faux marble, stone and even wood grain! Each student had the opportunity to paint and create one of the faux finishes. The result is this stunning mural that will be the legacy of the class of 2007-08. Mr. Lombard was an artist in residence made possible by funds raised by the 2007 Auction.
