Who Was Elizabeth Holladay?

Elizabeth Holladay Elementary School is named for Miss Elizabeth Jane Holladay, a pioneer teacher who started the first public school in the Glen Allen area of Henrico County at her home in 1886.

 portrait of Elizabeth Holladay

On May 18, 1969, this portrait of Elizabeth Jane Holladay was presented to Holladay Elementary School at its dedication ceremony. Miss Holladay's family presented the painting, executed by Mrs. Ann Blanton Pritchett in 1968. Today the portrait hangs in the school library.
Mrs. Pritchett was a nationally recognized portrait artist and a resident of Richmond, Virginia. She died in May, 1978, at the age of 62.

"Miss Lizzie," as she was called, was born on September 14, 1848 in Spotsylvania County. We do not know her preparation for teaching, except that she was sent to Locust Grove Private School for Young Ladies. In 1873 her family moved to Glen Allen. She taught for two terms, from 1884 to 1886, in Spotsylvania County. Henrico County School Board records show that from 1892 to 1895 she attended the Virginia School of Methods at Bedford, Virginia for twenty days each summer.

In the fall of 1886 Elizabeth Holladay signed a contract with the Henrico County School Board to teach 20 pupils in her home on Mountain Road. She was paid monthly at the rate of $1.50 per average scholar. She furnished the schoolroom on her second floor with two tables made from a shipping crate, two porch benches, and some chairs. Black oilcloth tacked to another part of the shipping crate served as a blackboard. Later she moved the school furniture to her parlor on the first floor and taught there for the next 11 years. In 1899 a one-room school was built a mile west of the railroad station in Glen Allen (this was the original Glen Allen School). The enrollment in 1900 was 70 students. In her contracts there were strict stipulations about making the fire and sweeping the schoolroom daily. She resigned in 1901 because of family responsibilities and the distance she had to walk to the school; however, she continued to tutor students in her home until she broke her hip in 1920. Elizabeth Holladay died on November 29, 1933, at the age of 85.

This information was taken from a biography by Dorothy Ogden Keener with the help of Miss Holladay's great-nieces: Mrs. Stanley Lenz, Jr., Miss Elizabeth Jane Cross and Mrs. Roland L. Jones. This and other notes were compiled by Mary Jane Howard, Holladay librarian, for the 136th birthday celebration.
