Special Education Advisory Commitee Application for Membership

 

What is the Special Education Advisory Committee?
A committee that works with the school board, administrators, parents and teachers who are responsible for special education students.

Who are special education students?

They are students who have been found eligible for one or more of the following conditions:

  • Autism
  • Developmentally Delayed
  • Hearing Impaired which may include deafness
  • Learning Disabled
  • Mentally Disabled
  • Orthopedically Impaired
  • Other Health Impaired
  • Severely and Profoundly Disabled
  • Speech-Language Impaired
  • Visually Impaired which may include blindness
  • Preschool Education for the Developmentally Delayed

Who serves on the committee?
The committee, appointed by the School Board, is comprised of parents of special education students and affiliated human services agency representatives. School personnel, the Director of Exceptional Education, as well as a representative from the School Board, serve as consultants.

Who may attend?
All meetings are open to the public. Members welcome anyone interested in special education and encourage participation.

What is the function of the Special Education Advisory Committee?

  • To advise the school division of unmet special education needs
  • To assist the school division in recognizing needs for special education students
  • To give periodic reports and recommendations to the Henrico County School Board
  • To work with the school division to inform the community of monthly meetings
  • To review annually the special education plan and prepare recommendations regarding the plan
  • To hold monthly programs for teachers and parents as well as business meetings which the public is encouraged to attend
