Principal's Message

Blue Devil Students and Parents,

Happy New Year and welcome to the 2009 - 2010 school year!  I am looking forward to another great year at Varina.  As a result of the efforts of students and staff, Varina High School is a fully accredited high school meeting State SOL requirements and National No Child Left Behind requirements!

This should prove to be another strong year for our Community of Learners.  A New Year allows each of us to set some goals for the upcoming year.  I’d like to propose several new challenges for each of you this school year.

First, an academic challenge.  We have a wide variety of students at VHS, but every one of you has the chance to perform to the best of your ability.  Take some time to set a goal for yourself with regard to your learning.  This could mean shooting for honor roll each nine weeks, or it could mean working toward a certain grade point average.  It could also mean working toward a pass advanced score on an SOL test or taking our new SAT preparation class.  The key is to not settle for the basic minimum when it comes to your academic life.  I wish you the best in this challenge.

My second challenge is to get involved.  We have so many opportunities at VHS for students outside the classroom.  Whether its playing on the field hockey team or in the marching band … or participating in our award winning clubs like Key Club and FBLA, there is an opportunity that is right for you.  Sometimes finding the right fit is not easy, but once you find the right fit … it is always worth it.

My last challenge is for all of us to work together as a PROUD COMMUNITY of learners.  We spend the majority of our days at Varina High School.  Many of us refer to it as our second home.  As you walk through your day here at school, remember that we should all be proud of who we are and what we do.

This means that we work hard in the classroom… Each day, you should be prepared to learn and do your best.
This mean that we respect each other… that we treat others as we would like to be treated.
This means that we take care of our home … we all know that Varina is an older facility with some  but we have spent the summer getting the facility ready for you.  It truly looks as good as I’ve ever seen it.  So please, find trash cans for your litter and respect all of our facilities.

I hope that you will take these challenges and you will have your best year ever.

I am very excited about the school year.  I look forward to seeing each of you on campus.

We have a lot to teach you and you have a lot to learn!  Have a great YEAR of learning.
Sincerely,
Tracie Omohundro
