College Visits/Upcoming Events

Seniors, are you struggling with how to prepare to search for colleges? Are you unaware of the differences between the colleges and universities on your list? Would you like to find out more information BEFORE visiting?  Look no further. Your source for knowledge is here at Varina High School. College representatives from the east coast will visit Varina High during the school year to provide information about their college, the application process, deadlines and financial aid.

Dates and times of visits are posted below and are announced on the morning and afternoon announcements.  Listen carefully to find out if your college/university will be visiting soon! To attend you must sign up in advance in the School Counseling office and a pass will be sent to you to guarantee your attendance.  We encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to help make an informed decision about your post secondary education.

For more information regarding college visits contact Mr. Michael Oliver or your school counselor.

Employer Visits

Each year our students inquire about employment opportunities that they can embark on after they graduate - prior to going to college, or the military and or during the school year as a part time job.  Some students also search for summer employment only or a full time job. To assist our students we will be asking area employers to visit the campus to inform the students of the application process, criteria, etc. to obtain employment with their company.  We hope this will help all students gain the financial edge that will assist them in accomplishing all of their future goals.

This year we will also be hosting our 2nd annual Career Fair – Clash of Careers ’09 to assist our seniors in obtaining employment after high school. This was a huge success last year we are very excited to host it again bigger and better than ever!

For more information regarding employer visits and the upcoming 2009 Career Fair please contact Ms. Gena Jones.

Volunteer Opportunities

Want a great opportunity to earn community service hours? Then volunteer your time to tutoring and help young students in mastering the skills for their grade level and enjoy the friendship and bond that develops between the tutor and the tutee. It is a great way to help the future of Varina High School to learn the study skills that they will need as they enter a new level of school.

Tutoring options will be available at the following locations: Varina Elementary, Ward Elementary, Baker Elementary, Rolfe Middle, and Elko Middle School. Transportation will not be provided.

The tutoring can vary for the grade level that you are working with, and the needs of that student. While some students need help in reading and math others may need help with science and social studies. Some of the other areas that students may need help with are vocabulary and spelling words.

It is an easy process to become a part of this wonderful community. Stop by the school counseling department to sign up. There is a clipboard in the waiting room with a sign up sheet located on it. Just leave your name and if you prefer to tutor in the mornings, or if you have work release if you are able to tutor in the afternoon. If you have any questions please stop by and see Mrs. Fuse.

This is a great opportunity to help others, while feeling good about what you are doing. If this is something you would like to do, and earn community service hours then stop by the school counseling department today and sign up.
