Impact of an Alternative Intervention Program

Allen-HardyBeverly B. Allen-Hardy is the Associate Principal at Jacob L. Adams Elementary School. She has worked in HCPS for more than 20 years as an elementary music teacher, vocational counselor, administrative aide, assistant principal, and principal.  Beverly's passion is leadership in the at-risk school environment.  She served as principal of Mount Vernon Middle School, and was the administrator of the Basic/New Start alternative program.  Beverly received her bachelor's degree in Music Education from VCU, and a masters degree in Human Resources from Webster University, St. Louis, MO.  In 2009, she graduated from VCU with a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership.  She serves as an adjunct professor for VCU, teaching courses in the Visiting International Faculty Program and masters cohort.

KimPowell

Jodie Brinkmann serves as the Principal of Echo Lake Elementary School. Her mission, along with her highly dedicated and talented staff, is to be a leader in educational excellence, engaging and challenging all students to become life-long learners and productive citizens. She received her bachelor's degree in elementary and early childhood education from Clarion University of Pennsylvania in 1993. After teaching for several years in Richmond City Public Schools and in Western Pennsylvania, she began teaching in Henrico County and simultaneously earned her master's degree in administration and supervision from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1999. Her diverse experiences in Henrico County include serving as an elementary classroom teacher, mathematics coach, resource teacher, assistant principal, and currently principal of her beloved Echo Lake Elementary for the past 11 years. In 2012, Dr. Brinkmann was awarded her doctoral degree from Virginia Tech in educational leadership and policy studies. She recently presented at the Virginia State School Board Association Conference, Virginia Educational Research Association Conference, served as a Next Generation Leadership Academy presenter and mentor through EduLead, and currently mentors several aspiring administrators.

KimPowell

Contributor, Kim F. Powell is the Elementary Science Specialist in HCPS. She oversees the science curriculum in 45 elementary schools supporting 24,000 elementary students. Ms. Powell has been a curriculum specialist for two years and has devoted her career to teaching children for more than 22 years. She hosts a blog for that houses content to assist them in integrating STREAM (Science Technology Research Engineering Art and Mathematics) into their classrooms. Henrico 21

Debra Roethke

Debra Adams Roethke serves as an educational specialist for the department of staff development in HCPS. After 12 years of teaching elementary music and middle school chorus, Debra began to work for staff development as an instructional technology resource teacher and staff development instructor. For the last 5 years she has served as educational specialist for instructional technology. Her primary responsibilities are working with secondary ITRTs and special projects. She has helped develop online training websites for students, parents, and teachers as well as developing online software courses, Internet Safety training, data training, and websites for county administrators and leaders. She is an adjunct professor for VCU and has helped implement a technology certificate and masters cohort in partnership with VCU that focuses on 21st century skills and instructional technology leadership.

Gaynell Lyman

Gaynell Lyman has worked in HCPS since 1993. She has served in a variety of positions including chemistry and physics teacher, instructional technology resource teacher, and staff development instructor. In her current role as instructional technology specialist, she supports the secondary schools and district-wide initiatives. Some of her special projects include Henrico 21, Reflective Friends and Quality Questioning. Gaynell is most proud of her work in the arenas of coaching and high quality 21st century learning.

Andy Armstrong

Presenter, Andrew R. Armstrong has been the principal at Rolfe Middle School for five years. He taught Spanish at Varina High School until 2004 and then became an assistant principal there. He then moved on to become the principal at Rolfe. Armstrong has his bachelor's degree from the University of Richmond, master's from Virginia Commonwealth University and is now working on his Ph.D in public policy at VCU's Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs.

Dave Myers

Dave Myers serves as the Director of Secondary Education where he works with 22 middle and high school programs. Upon completing a degree in history from Colorado State University in 1995, Dr. Myers served as a social studies teacher, coach and sponsor. He went on to get a master’s degree and held his first leadership role as assistant principal and activities director. Dr. Myers received a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership in 2008 from Virginia Commonwealth University while serving as Principal of Mills Godwin High School. Dr. Myers also serves as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Richmond, where he teaches school law and ethics.
