Creating 21st Century Learning Environments

The mission of Henrico County Public Schools is to "inspire, empower and educate every student to be prepared for success in the 21st century."  This is accomplished by creating 21st century learning environments in which the instructor is a content expert, provides engaging, student-centered 21st century instruction, and where 21st century technology tools are available for instruction. When all three pieces are in place, 21st century instruction exists. The TPCK model honors key elements of a great classroom. Technology, pedagogy and content knowledge. The overlap of these three components is where the 21st Century classroom is most powerful.

To build and nurture 21st century instruction, Henrico County developed the Technology Innovation/Integration Progression Chart (TIPC.) TIPC is based on the Partnership for 21st Century Skills, the Nets*T, and the Nets*S and is used as an aid in the development of 21st century instruction and teacher growth. Areas of focus include:

  • Creativity and Innovation
  • Communication and Collaboration
  • Critical Thinking and Problems Solving
  • Information Fluency

These skills built on strong basic skills and content and delivered through 21st century learning tools provide our students with the learning opportunities they will need to be successful.
