What
Is Practical Nursing?
It is a vocation in which the licensed practical nurse
is
prepared to provide nursing care for clients in a variety of health care
settings under the supervision of a licensed health professional authorized by
the Virginia Board of Health Professions.
Who May Apply?
- Students entering their senior year in Henrico County
Public Schools with a minimum GPA of 2.5.
- Adults who are employees of St. Mary's Hospital or who
reside in Henrico County.
- Adults residing outside Henrico County.
What
are the Features of the Program?
- The program is 18 months.
- Practical Nursing I is from September to June.
- PNI is taught at Hermitage Technical Center and
Highland Springs Technical Center.
- The program is taught Monday-Friday from 8:30
a.m.-11:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m.
- Seniors attend their home school for half of a day
and the technical center for the other half day.
- Adults attend class either for the morning or
afternoon session.
- Practical Nursing II is from June to the following
March.
- The students attend full-time (7 a.m. -4 p.m.).
- Students gain clinical experience in a variety of
community settings and at Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital.
Transportation
- Transportation to technical centers is furnished by the
county bus system for senior students in Practical Nursing I.
- Seniors provide their own transportation to the
clinical site during Practical Nursing I.
- Practical Nursing II students provide their own
transportation.
- Adults provide their own transportation throughout the
program.
