Redistricting Project for 2010: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the role of school board members with respect to the redistricting process?

School board members stipulate the responsibilities of the committee, identify goals for the redistricting project, conduct public hearings on proposals, and approve attendance boundary changes. The school board does not participate in the community-based committee meetings or conduct redistricting related meetings with constituents. In order to maintain the integrity and objectivity of the process, the school board separates itself from the process until the appointed time when they will begin to review options and recommendations presented. The school board will hold public hearings to hear directly from constituents prior to approving attendance boundary changes.

Our school is not over capacity and is not forecasted to be over capacity in the near future. Could we still be redistricted?
It is possible that the attendance boundary for your school may change even if your school is not over capacity or forecasted to be overcapacity. The reason is that schools that need relief may not be adjacent to the location of the new schools and multiple boundary shifts may be required.

Our school is not being used as a meeting location for the redistricting community information meetings. Could we still be redistricted?
Yes. It is possible that any school will be redistricted. The location of the meetings does not affect whether or not a school is going to be redistricted.

When will the new attendance boundaries be determined?
The schedule for the school board to vote to approve the new attendance boundaries is May 28, 2009.

Have preliminary boundary lines been created?
No. Preliminary boundary lines have not been created. The community redistricting committee will develop the preliminary attendance boundaries this fall (2008) and will be presented to the public beginning in January 2009
