Emergency Medical Technician(EMT)

Prerequisite: State regulations require that the student be 16 years old by the first day of class.

Major Units of Study

The Emergency Medical Technician course provides the first phase of training in preparing an individual to function in an emergency situation.

The class prepares students to take the state EMT certificate exam. Upon certification, students will have an opportunity to work with a rescue squad during the second semester, in the afternoons, during class time for credit.

We will learn:

    1. Patient Assessment
    2. Medical Terminology and anatomy
    3. Medical emergencies and respiratory arrest
    4. Cardiac arrest, CPR
    5. Automatic external defibrillation
    6. Bleeding and Shock
    8. Fractures, dislocations, sprains
    9. Soft tissue injuries, cuts, bruises
    10. Burns and hazardous materials
    11. Emergency Childbirth
    12. Radio dispatch and ambulance operations
    13. Vehicle access and extrication fundamentals
    14. Incident Management systems and disaster management

Course Background

Students in this program should have a good science background and possess a genuin concern for helping others. They should enjoy working with public safety proffessionals, including law enforcement officials, firefighters,physicians, nurses, and emergency personnel. A good driving record is important.

Career Information

EMT's fall into two categories: volunteers and paid public saftey careers. The Henrico county volunteer rescue squad and Henrico county division of fire support this class, and need qualified EMT's. A willingness to take further training and specilized courses is needed for advancement in most public saftey occupations. This is an excellent course to take in preparation for a career in the medical field.

Public Saftey Curriculum

Students who wish to explore a broader public saftey curriculum may attent Hermitage Technical Center for two years, takeing one year of EMT and one year of Law Enforcement. Students may schedule either course first in the Program squence.
