National Honor Society |

The William H. Furgeson Chapter of the National Honor Society
is the
most prestigious honor society at Varina. Membership is by invitation,
and induction takes place in the junior or senior year. Specific qualifications
for membership are as follows:
- cumulative G.P.A. of 3.5 or higher;
- no out-of-school suspensions or more than two AIP assignments
in
the year previous to the induction;
- excellence in character, leadership, and service.
All of these areas are considered equally and are evaluated
by the NHS Selection
Committee. Special attention is also given to general
faculty input. Enrollment at
Varina High School for a minimum of one semester
prior to induction is required.
Students not inducted into NHS have the
right to appeal. All students who were not
selected for membership will
be eligible to be rated for the next tapping as long as
they still meet
the GPA and other requirements.

Juniors
and seniors are inducted into this national service organization by invitation.
Membership criteria include outstanding scholarship, leadership, service,
and
character. Students must have a 3.0 grade point average to be considered
for
membership in the Beta Club. Also, the general faculty has input,
which is evaluated
by the BETA Club Selection Committee. All students
who were not selected for
membership will be eligible to be rated for
the next tapping as long as they still
meet the GPA and other requirements.

This group recognizes outstanding achievement in the performing
and dramatic arts.
Membership is earned by achieving sufficient points
through participation in
perfomances, technical assistance, and/or other
areas of the dramatic and
performing arts program. Students must be in
the upper one-third of their class.

Tri-M Music Honor Society is the international music honor society
for junior and
senior high school students that motivates and recognizes
musical achievement.
Founded in 1952 by Alexander and Frances Harley,
Tri-M has helped young people
provide years of service through music in
thousands of schools throughout the world.

Math Honor Society |

Mu Alpha Theta is a national mathematics honor society; the beginning
letters spell
M-A-TH. Its purpose is to recoginze students who excel in
math and to promote an
interest in mathematics. Membership is by invitation,
and inductions are held in the
spring of each year for rising spohomores,
juniors, and seniors. To become a member
of Mu Alpha Theta, the following
requirements must be met:
- Completed
five semesters of college preparatory math (usually Algebra I,
Geometry,
and first semester of Algebra II)
- Sophomores, juniors, or seniors must have earned at least a 3.5
average in their
math classes, and freshmen must have earned at
least a 4.0 average in their math classes.

Publications
Communication with the Varina community is a tradition at
Varina High School. Our goal is to inform our parents and patrons about
all school activities and to encourage their attendance at school events.
Subscriptions to these publications can be paid at the beginning of the
year with other fees. Newspapers are delivered every nine weeks and the
yearbook and Paradox are delivered in June. |

The student newspaper is designed for our students and is produced
by the school staff and the journalism classes. Stories are researched
and written by students and reflect life at Varina High School. Our student
newspaper is an award-winning publication and represents our school well.
Newspapers are delivered every nine weeks.

Our award-winning yearbook is produced annually and covers all
aspects of student life at Varina High School. Photographs of individual
students, as well as club and organizations and athletic group pictures,
are included. All students are encouraged to purchase this permanent record
of their days at Varina High School. Sales begin the first week of school
in first period class and continue through November. Delivery is in June.

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) is an organization
established by the business department.
Teachers in the business department
serve as chapter advisers. The local chapter conducts activities within
the framework of the state and national organizations.
The goals are

To develop competent, aggressive business leadership.
- To strengthen the confidence of students in themselves and their
work.
- To create more interest in, and understanding of, American business
enterprise.
- To encourage members in the development of individual projects which

Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) is a group organized by students, for students. Members
of SADD promote safe, healthy lifestyles, and educated decision making.
Some of the activites sponsored by the SADD club include
the birthday cards sponsored by PTSA and SADD, the Red Ribbon Campaign
and None for the Road.
This year the SADD club is promoting the Contract for
Life. This contract promotes educated decision making and communication.
It is our hope that students will begin to make life long decisions.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes has been challenging
coaches and athletes on the professional, college, high school, junior
high and youth levels
to use the powerful medium of athletics to impact the world for Jesus Christ. FCA is the largest interdenominational,
school-based, Christian sports organization in America. FCA focuses
on serving local communities by equipping, empowering and encouraging
people to make a difference for Christ.
