We are looking for peer volunteers to assist with exceptional education students to volunteer Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday during Directed Study. We are looking for students to play games, help teach basketball and cheerleading skills, help with All Star basketball league, and peer tutoring. Please see Ms. Davis in E4 to sign up or Ms. Cardwell in G11. Thanks and we hope you will all take part of this wonderful opportunity.
Tutoring Opportunities
Want a great opportunity to earn community service hours? Then volunteer
your time to tutoring and help young students in mastering the skills for their
grade level and enjoy the friendship and bond that develops between
the tutor and the tutee. It is a great way to help the future of Varina
High School to learn the study skills that they will need as they enter
a new level of school.
Tutoring options will be available at the following locations: Varina Elementary, Ward Elementary, Baker Elementary, Rolfe Middle, and Elko Middle School. Transportation will not be provided.
The tutoring can vary for the grade level that you are working with,
and the needs of that student. While some students need help in reading
and math others may need help with science and social studies. Some of
the other areas that students may need help with are vocabulary and spelling
words.
It is an easy process to become a part of this wonderful community.
Stop by the school counseling department to sign
up. There is a clipboard in the waiting room with a sign up sheet located
on it. Just leave your name and if you prefer to tutor in the mornings,
or if you have work release if you are able to tutor in the afternoon.
If you have any questions please stop by and see Mrs. Fuse.
This is a great opportunity to help others, while feeling good about
what you are doing. If this is something you would like to do, and earn
community service hours then stop by the school counseling department
today and sign up.
Why should you volunteer in your community?
This is why people become volunteers: because they can make a difference where someone or something needs help. If people never help each other and only care about themselves, the world becomes a crueler, sadder place. But when we volunteer our time, money, or talents, we help make our planet a better, happier home where people work together to make life easier for all.
Need another reason?
Volunteering is good for YOU!
Are you thinking, “What’s in it for me?” The answer is, plenty! Here are some of the things you might get in return for your giving:
- Making new friends
- Gaining important skills and experience that will help you later in life
- Making connections that can lead to a job or career
- Seeing more of your community and world
- Building confidence and self-esteem
- Exploring what you want to do with your life
- Feeling needed and important
- Feeling satisfaction at getting things done and helping others
- Meeting people who could be role models
- Using your mind, body, and creativity
- Getting active and healthier
- Relieving stress
- Fighting boredom
- Spending time doing what you really care about
- Gaining an edge on getting into college
- Feeling like you’re part of a community
- Having fun!
And, one final reason to volunteer:
Those students who complete 50 hours of community service will receive recognition on their diploma and on their high school transcript.
