Parent Resource Center

Henrico County Public Schools believes that a strong parent/school partnership is an essential building block in an effective educational program. Toward this belief, the Parent Resource Center provides information, education, and support for parents of students in our schools. Programs and services offered through the Parent Resource Center will be conducted at sites throughout Henrico County.

Staffing
The staff of the Parent Resource Center consists of parent facilitators and educational professionals who are ready to serve our patrons.

Lisa Harvey Abernathey has joined Henrico County Public Schools as the Facilitator of the Parent Resource Center. Lisa holds a Bachelor of Science degree is Mass Communications/Public Relations from Virginia Commonwealth University and has completed masters-level course work in Special Education at Liberty University. To this position, she brings perspectives both as an educator and as a family member of someone with a learning disability. Lisa hopes to increase the visibility of the Parent Resource Center and solidify its reputation as being a valuable source for information as we partner with you in realizing your child's educational goals.

Workshops
Workshops are based on parent interest and requests, and have included such topics as high school program choices, elementary and middle school study skills, transition from elementary to middle school, and programs of special interest to parents of gifted and special education students. Seminar locations and dates will be published in upcoming issues of School Days. To ensure that parents are aware of these unique learning opportunities, all activities are also publicized on HCPS TV, the educational access channel for Henrico County and on the HCPS District Calendar.

Requests for information
The center staff responds daily to phone and written requests for information which might include questions about advanced placement, guidelines for special education, programs for the gifted, or eligibility requirements for Head Start. Quite often the center receives calls from families moving to Henrico from other localities who want to know about special programs in the school system. By calling the Parent Resource Center, materials can be checked out and sent to an area school for parents to pick up.
